Rutherford House, Edmonton

Rutherford House is a provincial Historic site. It was the home of the first Premier of Alberta Alexander Cameron Rutherford. In the year 1911, A.C Rutherford and his wife Mattie shifted to this house near the university campus. Till date, this house is bearing the tradition of the Rutherford Family. Visitors are taken into the house with guidance as all the things of the house have its own importance. The sparkle of the silver, the glow of the library lamp and the scent of the freshly baked scones entice the visitors into the house.

The Rutherford House remains open from May 15th to the Labor Day that is the first Monday in September (from 9 am to 5 pm daily). In the winter time, the timing is different: From Labor Day to 15th May (12 noon to 5pm, Tuesday through Sunday). There is a restaurant named Arbor Restaurant which remains open from 11 am to 4 pm (Tuesday to Sunday). There is a specific admission process for the visitors:
  1. For the Adults (18-34 yrs)Â Â Â Â $4.00
  2. Seniors ( 65 yrs and over)Â Â Â Â Â $3.00
  3. For the youths ( 7 to 17 years)Â Â $3.00
  4.  Children for the age of 6 yrs and under           Free
  5. Family ( 2 adults and children)Â Â Â Â $ 12.00

The entry is free for the members of the local friends’ society.

If you are searching for a wedding house or a room for holding a conference, Rutherford House has the option for that also. There are few large rooms and a banquette hall for serving the purpose. The restaurant in the house takes the full responsibility of the full catering service. The reception is fairly large for the same purpose. For the wedding purpose, the house can provide solutions as there are arrangements for it also. This place can be an elegant and unique location for your family celebration.

This house has been given the title of a vintage and heritage house with the help of the active members of the “Friends of the Rutherford Society”. The society was created on 22nd April, 1985 as a registered charitable society. The motto of the society is to help in the preservation and the promotion of the house and its activities. Besides, they have the initiative for the people who are interested to know about the heritage city Alberta. They help people to know about the Cultural, Political and the Social history of Alberta.

This society offers the membership for the interested people for some minimal amount. The Rutherford House is a non-profitable organization and the main motto of the society is not earning money, but to help the society in building a tradition in the history. To organize Charity shows, educational seminar and tours and many more initiatives, this society started to provide membership to the general Public. The costumed interpreters restore daily household activities, renovate important events in Rutherford's life and lead guided tours of his home. Rutherford House bears an importance in the history of Alberta.
