Festival Culture in Edmonton

Edmonton is known as The Festival City. Edmonton celebrates many large festivals each year. Edmonton has 30 festivals through out the year therefore Edmonton also called as Canada’s cultural capital of 2007.

Some festivals held in Edmonton,

Week Labor Arts Festivals – This festival celebrating worker rights and struggles. This festival was ended on 1st of May.

The Work Art & Design Festival – held in June. The duration was from June to early July. This festival featured by arts and designs of well known the Canadian and international artists and award winning designers showcase. Also this festival gives chance to emerging artist students to expose their skills.

Edmonton International Street Performer’s Festivals – The festival held in July. This gives opportunities to the street performers from all over the world to show their talent.

Capital EX – This festival is generally called as K-Days (Klondike Days). K days is basically annual fair and exhibition based on Gold rush. In 2006, the festival would renamed as “The Capital City Exhibition” i.e. Capital EX. The festival activities are carnival rides, races of chuckwagon, music, shows and daily fireworks.

Edmonton International Fringe Festival – In mid of August the festival was held. This festival is largest in North America known as fringe theatre festival and second festival is worldwide Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Edmonton Folk Music Festival – This festival is one of the most popular festivals for fold music in North America.

Edmonton Heritage Festival - The Heritage festival is takes place on Heritage Day for long week end. The festival is ethnocultural festival held in Howrelak Park.

Free Will Shakespeare Festival – This festival was held since 1989 every summer in Edmonton. In the festival two plays of Shakespeare with full length professional production are performed also summer drama camp for youngsters are taken in festivals.

Also there are many festivals takes place in Edmonton like Edmonton International Film Festival and Dragon Boat Festival.

The overall Edmonton Festival culture is full of fun for every one. It includes music; festivals based on music are Edmonton’s Labatt Blues Festival, Yardbird Jazz Festival, Edmonton Folk Music Festival as well as Symphony under the Sky Festival. Secondly it includes performances; Edmonton International Fringe Theatre Festival is featured with live theatre performances, dances and film fests. The event known as Works Arts and Design Festival and Visual Eyez festival of performance art are based on visual art. Also International Children’s Festival, K-Day, Santa Claus Parade and Heritage Festival are for family fun and enjoyment for every people from Edmonton. For sports lover, Canadian Biekebeiner Ski festival and Edmonton Dragon Boat Festival are very popular.
The festivals of Edmonton become more effective by spirit of Edmonton peoples and good culture. So attend Edmonton festivals at least once for a great experience.
